A Prayer of John Henry Newman

O Lord, support us all the day long
of this troubled life,
until the shadows lengthen
and the evening comes
and the busy world is hushed,
the fever of life is over,
and our work is done.
Then, in your mercy,
grant us a safe lodging,
and a holy rest,
and peace at the last,
through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.

This is a prayer adapted from a famous prayer of John Henry Newman’s and is used in my denomination’s Compline Service at the close of the day. It is beautiful, and moving, and I just wanted to share it with you this day, with the prayer that wherever and whenever you read this, our merciful God would grant you safe lodging and a holy rest. Blessings to you all.

    1. Compline is my favorite, too. Such beautiful, quiet, simplicity.

Your comment reminded me that I have a Compline Service I use for my personal devotions on my computer – I am going to publish it tonight on my blog. Blessings to you.
