The Peace of God

Surpassing all our understanding,
We cannot earn it or learn it,
Nor can this world provide it.
But there is One who comes
To our heart’s door and
Offers us what
He alone
Can give –
Peace.

Can you guess which scripture verses I had in mind when I wrote this nonet? I bet so, but just in case, or as a reminder, here they are:

Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. I do not give to you as the world gives.

John 14:27

I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.

John 16:33

The peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

Philippians 4:7

Listen! I am standing at the door, knocking; if you hear my voice and open the door, I will come in to you and eat with you, and you with me.

Revelation 3:20

It is clear that Jesus wants all of us to blessed with the gift of peace, true, everlasting peace. He gives it to us freely. But only he can give it. The world cannot give us this peace, as much as we would like it to, and as much as we might look for it here. The world cannot give it to us, but this means that the world cannot take it away, either. Jesus has overcome the world. We can take heart. We can be at peace, not just with the world, but with ourselves. No matter what is happening in our world, or with us, we can be at peace. That is the gift that Jesus offers us all. But we must open the door. Jesus knocks, but he won’t force himself in. He waits for us to open the door to him. So, if you haven’t opened it recently, open the door to your heart this day, and find the peace of God which surpasses all understanding. May it always guard your heart and your mind in Christ Jesus. Amen.

  1. Amen! Great choice of form for the poem, helping us focus in on Peace (as only Christ can give). I love that truth that since the world didn’t give it, it can’t take our peace away! A timely word. I just wrote to a student reminding her to choose peace.
