Do not quench the Spirit.
1 Thessalonians 5:19

This is a sonnet inspired by Paul’s words in First Thessalonians, words that he wrote as part of this well-known encouragement:
Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you. Do not quench the Spirit.
1 Thessalonians 5:16-19
The more I thought about those words, “do not quench the Spirit,” the more I wondered how it would even be possible?! We might, in our own lives, extinguish the Holy Spirit, which is what I think is the nature of Paul’s warning. But the Holy Spirit cannot be driven from this world. And the good news of Jesus Christ will continue to be shared by his Spirit-filled followers until his glorious return. Thanks be to God!
Unquenchable Spirit
Do not quench the Spirit, scripture teaches –
Do not extinguish this flame that inspires,
This fire that extends Heaven’s far reaches,
This love that descends to lead us higher.
As if we could! Quench this Heaven-sent blaze?
This holy fire burning out of control,
This wind-driven firestorm of divine grace,
This sacred breath giving life to our souls?
Sent from the Father through God’s beloved Son,
The cross could not quench it, nor could the tomb.
It will blaze ’til all born under the sun
Are touched by its love, and brought to the throne.
Unquenchable Spirit, Heaven-sent dove,
God’s winged mercy, ever burning with love.
Very beautiful indeed and so uplifting.
